Rail services on the MRTS stretch from Chennai Beach to Velachery were disrupted on Monday following derailment of a train near the Light House station. Train 41056 from Velachery derailed at 12.35 p.m. between Mundakakanniammankoil Station and Light House station.
“The second coach from the guard derailed and none was injured. The ladies coach was rerailed at 14.35 hours. At least six trains have been cancelled,” said a railway spokesperson. “We heard an unusually loud noise at 12.30 p.m. Passengers tried to jump out of the train. But the train stopped near Light House station. People noticed some sparks near the wheels,” said M.Shibi, a commuter who boarded the train at Tiruvanmiyur. Doctors from Railway hospital in Egmore rushed to the spot.
Southern Railway General Manager Vashishta Johri inspected the accident spot. “A committee has been constituted to pinpoint the cause of derailment and the report will be ready in 10 days,” Mr. Johri said adding that a four-member committee had been formed to conduct an inquiry. After a four-hour disruption, normal operations resumed at 4.45 p.m.
