Ushering in the spirit and joy of giving, the 10th edition of the ‘Daan Utsav’ will take place from October 2 to 8.

Launched in 2009, the event is held annually from Gandhi Jayanthi day and is marked by a week of activities aimed at bringing together people from all walks of life to give back to the deserving in their own way.

“The idea of the festival is for all people to voluntarily participate and experience joy from an act of kindness and there is no blueprint as such about what an individual or an organisation should do. A number of schools, colleges and organisations volunteer to host events as well as come forward to try and engage the public too,” explained Aarti Madhusudan, a volunteer with Daan Utsav.

Grand feast

As part of the events held to mark the joy of giving week, the city’s cleanliness champions will be honoured and served a grand feast by several volunteers, who will also be taking a pledge on the occasion to do their bit to keep the city clean. John Rajkumar, secretary of Maithree, an association of parents of exceptional children, said that the children will be meeting traffic policemen and transport workers at the bus depots.

“The children will be giving them special hand-painted ‘Thank You’ cards as well as products that the senior children in our learning centres have made. These are people that they get to see on their way to our centres everyday,” he said.
