Nearly 11 months after the murder of an elderly couple at a farmhouse near Avadi, the police have arrested a couple from Andhra Pradesh, in Haridwar, Uttarakhand.

On November 27 last year, Jagadheesan, 68, and his wife Vishalini, 60, were found dead at their farmhouse. Both were retired government employees and worked at the central printing press in Chennai. The couple were living alone on the outskirts of the city. Around 50 sovereigns of jewellery and cash had gone missing from the house. The household help, Suresh, and his wife Lakshmi of Andhra Pradesh, were absconding.

The police suspected that they could have escaped with gold and cash from the house, after committing the crime. The weapon used for murder was found in the backyard of the house. Suresh’s mobile phone was found switched off.

The Avadi police registered a case and were searching for the couple, who were seen boarding a north-bound train at the Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central railway station.

A special team traced the couple to Haridwar and apprehended them. They were brought to the Avadi police station and interrogated.

The suspect, Suresh, 35, has 21 criminal cases, including theft and robbery, against him, in his native Vishakhapatnam, the police said. He reportedly escaped from police custody after attacking an escort team while he was being taken to court from prison. Giving the slip to the Andhra Pradesh police, he had shifted with his wife to Chennai, the police added.
