The Kilpauk police on Saturday arrested a man working as a cook, who stole diamond jewellery from the house of his employer.

Srinivasan and his wife Reeta live in a house on Kilpauk Garden Road. The family runs an automobile spare parts manufacturing firm. Recently, they engaged Mohammad Haneefa, 58, as a cook. “The case was cracked within six hours,” said Assistant Commissioner Harikumar.

On Friday afternoon, after returning from work, Mr. Srinivasan and his wife were shocked to see the doors of the house and the bureau open and diamond jewellery missing. When the couple called Haneefa over phone, he gave them conflicting answers about his location and avoided meeting them.

The couple lodged a complaint with the Police Commissioner. A special team arrested Haneefa near Tiruvallur and recovered the jewellery. During interrogation, he told the police he had stolen the jewellery to open an eatery.
