The high-level committee meeting of the DMK on Thursday failed to evolve a consensus on various proposals, including a three-year fixed term for office-bearers, aimed at restructuring the party organisation at various levels.

Though, as many as 26 proposals were placed before the meeting only the suggestion to create ward level units at panchayats could get approval. These units will come under a panchayat-level unit.

The proposals were drafted by a committee constituted in the previous general council meeting held immediately after the 2011 Assembly elections. The DMK fared very badly in the election and wanted to revamp the party organisation. DMK MP and party's organising secretary T.K.S. Elangovan is the convenor of the committee.

Seen as the brainchild of DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin, who wants to bring in more young faces in the party organisation, the proposal to fix three terms for district secretaries and other party office-bearers was stoutly opposed by former minister and Salem district secretary Veerapandi S. Arumugam, party sources said.

Another proposal was creation of more district units by bifurcating big district units. Though many district secretaries, who are loyal to Mr. Stalin, were present in the meeting, they did not raise their voice in support of the proposal. Apparently, they too wanted to wield clout over a larger area.

As per the proposal, more district units could be created by limiting the number of Assembly constituencies in each district.

At present each revenue district is functioning as a district unit. “We will again place these proposals before the general council meeting on Saturday,” said a senior leader.

Besides Mr. Stalin, the meeting was attended by Union Minister M.K. Alagiri, and Kanimozhi, MP.
