Connections for bio-toilets: civic body sets deadline

Facilities not in operation due to delay in getting water, sewer and electricity links

The Chennai Corporation has set a deadline to provide water, sewer and electricity connections by the concerned authorities to modular toilets installed in various parts of the city.

With the Chennai Corporation receiving severe flak from the public for the modular toilets which are in operation, for lack of water or electricity facilities, the civic body at a meeting held on Monday with various stakeholders has set June 20 as the deadline for providing these facilities. A senior official of the Chennai Corporation said the civic body had planned to construct bio toilets at 348 locations in the city to prevent open defecation. Having floated tenders and issued work orders, the contractors have also started building toilets at several locations. But these toilets could not start functioning because of delay in getting service connections for water, sewer and electricity, he added.

The modular toilet going by different nomenclature like e-toilet, bio toilet, Namma toilet or SSS toilet have already been put up at more than 100 places, the official pointed out.

A senior official of Tangedco confirmed that a meeting was held at the Ripon Building and denied any delay on part of Tangedco to provide electricity connections for any public facility.
