CM holds meet to reduce TNEB debt

 After tackling the acute power crisis in the State for the past four years, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has turned her focus on reducing the debt of the State’s power utility.

 At Kodanad on Monday, Ms. Jayalalithaa discussed the Financial Restructuring Plan (FRP) of the Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation (Tantransco) at a high-level meeting.  Finance Minister O. Panneerselvam, Electricity Minister Natham R. Viswanathan, Chief Secretary K. Gnanadesikan, Energy Secretary Rajesh Lakhoni, TNEB MD Sai Kumar and the Chief Minister’s secretaries participated in the discussion.

 Mr. Lakhoni made a presentation at the meeting. The Centre’s concept note on the FRP was discussed, an official release said.

 Under the FRP, the government had agreed to take over debt worth Rs. 6,353 crore floated in the form of bonds in 2013-14.

The government has already taken over Rs. 1,000 crore. Another Rs. 2,000 crore would be taken over by the government in 2015-16. This was part of the government’s continuous efforts to reduce the debt, sources said.
