A delay in appointing more dog catchers has led to a pile-up of complaints on street dogs in the city.

Over 1,000 complaints received in the past two weeks are pending. “Hundreds of complaints on street dogs remain pending because of fewer dog catchers,” said an official of the Chennai Corporation. There are 28 dog catchers working for the Corporation, an inadequate number for the city.

Civic body officials said it was difficult to find people to do the job. “Nets should be used for catching dogs. But they do get bitten. Not surprisingly, some catchers quit under the circumstances,” the official said.

The Corporation has planned to hire personnel from other cities such as Madurai to work here, but the team is yet to arrive.

“We will explore options to increase the number of catchers. A delay may increase the dog population within a short period,” said the official.
