IT forum’s protest stopped by police

January 03, 2015 01:51 am | Updated 01:51 am IST - CHENNAI:

An attempt by members of the Forum for IT Employees (FITE), to protest at Shollinganallur junction on Friday, was thwarted by the police, citing permission issues.

The forum was formed recently to deal with issues of job security following media reports that 25,000 employees of TCS would be reviewed.

Parimala Panchatcharam of FITE said they had sought and received permission for the protest from the city police commissioner.

“We were told the commissioner’s office would inform the local police. But, when we began to protest, they denied us permission,” she said.

Employees of TCS had first heard that 25,000 professionals would be fired.

But soon after the forum was formed, the company said the news regarding termination of employment was a rumour, said Ms. Panchatcharam.

“Initially, they said under-performers and those nearing retirement — comprising just about two per cent of the global work force — would be laid off. But already, some employees have been sacked,” she said.

FITE plans to approach the State Human Rights Commission soon.

The forum wants TCS to release a detailed report of the ongoing job termination, and wants the State to intervene and stop the lay-off.
