HC asks for details on opening of Pulianthope slaughterhouse

November 04, 2014 08:12 am | Updated 08:12 am IST - CHENNAI:

Pointing out it was strange that after its construction a modern slaughter house in the city remained closed, the Madras High Court on Monday ordered that the Chennai Corporation commissioner file an affidavit within two weeks on the status of its opening.

Passing interim orders on a writ petition, which sought the closure of the abattoir in Perambur (Pulianthope), the First Bench said the civic body should also submit details on the steps sought to be taken to improve the situation.

The petitioner, K. Gafoor Basha of Seven Wells, said though the modernisation of the facility was completed in 2006, the facility was not opened due to a “political misunderstanding”. Hence, the old unhygienic slaughter of animals, and storage of meat, was continuing till date. The blood and skin of the slaughtered animals were not being cleaned. In September, he submitted a detailed representation to the authorities for closing the facility. As no action was taken, he had filed the present petition.

The Court has also ordered notice to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.
