Relief from low voltage soon

May 20, 2014 09:58 am | Updated 09:58 am IST - CHENNAI:

A few months ago, severe voltage fluctuations haunted residents of Sarathy Nagar in Velachery.

The low voltage problem was due to heavy power demand from air-conditioners. But of late, residents have been spared the ordeal because TANGEDCO has installed automatic power factor controllers (APFCs) in distribution transformers in the locality.

A TANGEDCO official said APFC helps to not only prevent low voltage but also improves the distribution network by reducing transmission losses. The efficiency and life of transformers can also be prolonged. It has been proposed to install APFCs across the State, under the restructured accelerated power development and reform programme, in places with low voltage, identified by local officials, said the official. The official said 70 per cent of the work of installing APFCs had been completed, and the remaining work would be completed in the coming months.
