A gang of conmen posing as Income Tax department officials took away over 30 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs. 1.27 lakh from the house of AIADMK functionaries in Panaiyur under the pretext of conducting a raid, on Monday morning.

Kanathur police said the incident took place at the residence of Arumugam (43) and Sangeetha (38) on NRI Colony in VGP South Avenue. The two were councillors and are active party members in the area.

Eight persons clad in formals arrived around 7 a.m. at Arumugam’s house.

They confiscated the mobile phones of the residents and carried out the ‘raid’ for over 30 minutes.

They took out the gold jewellery and cash from the house and claimed they were confiscating them, sources said.

They advised the couple to approach the IT department in Nungambakkam for recovery of the cash and gold and left the house.

Arumugam made enquiries with partymen who were suspicious about the IT raid. Following this, he telephoned the IT department and realised that he had been cheated.

Arumugam later alerted the police.

Kanathur police have registered a case on the matter and further probe is under way.
