‘Car-Free Sundays,’ part of ‘Namma Chennai Namakke,’ an initiative of the Corporation of Chennai and the Chennai City Traffic Police, and presented by The Hindu, conceptualised by the Institute of Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) and Chennai City Connect Foundation, kicked off at Elliot’s Beach, Besant Nagar between 6 and 9 a.m. on Sunday.
As part of the initiative, a stretch of about 800 metres was cordoned off for motorised transport. The stretch was used by the residents of Chennai to indulge in fitness, and participate in community activities.
“To make car-free Sundays more engaging, we have planned several interactive and group activities, road art, dumb charades, antakshari, music and dance. In addition, sports professionals will lead fitness sessions and games, Zumba, badminton, frisbee, and karate and yoga,” according to experts at ITDP.
The car-free Sunday will have a host of activities, walking, cycling, sports and yoga. Residents can bring items they wish to use for activities.
Dos:
Come on your cycles. Bicycles for children above nine years of age will be available for free rent.
Carry ID cards in case you wish to rent bicycles.
Dress comfortably to enjoy the outdoor activities, bring your walking shoes and caps.
Please bring your own water-bottles
Don’ts:
The initiative is strictly litter-free. Don’t throw the litter anywhere except in trash bins.
No commercial activities in the zone.
Setting up food stalls or selling of any items will not be allowed; existing shops and hotels can function as usual.
