A car which went up in flames on a flyover near the Chennai airport triggered panic late on Friday.

Senthil, the vehicle’s driver, was returning to Ekkattuthangal from a mechanic shop by the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road.

At 10.45 p.m., when the vehicle was on the bridge, thick smoke suddenly rose from it.

Before he could exit the car, it caught fire.

The escape

He struggled to escape as the doors were auto-locked, but managed to after breaking open the rear window. The car was gutted before the Fire and Rescue Services personnel arrived. Traffic went out of gear on GST Road for more than an hour due to the incident.

The Traffic Investigation police have registered a case and are investigating.
