Office-bearers of several residents’ welfare associations, living along Rajiv Gandhi Salai, on Sunday, had an opportunity to meet candidates of the Chennai South constituency.
DMK’s Thamizhachi Thangapandian said she would ensure a third desalination plant to augment water supply to south Chennai. She also said she would consult experts and get a solution for the Perungudi dumpyard.
AIADMK candidate J. Jayavardhan, who had points noted down on his smartphone, said he would ensure that projects were implemented according to the schedule.
He said ₹320 crore had been allocated for a waste-to-energy plant at Perungudi and work was in progress for flood alleviation along the Adyar and Cooum river basins. MNM candidate R. Rangarajan, who underlined the need for rainwater harvesting, said he did not support desalination projects to supply drinking water, since the marine ecosystem would be spoiled.
‘Vote newcomers’
Independent candidate Radha, a transgender person, said she would do her best if elected. She asked voters to give newcomers a chance.
Harsha Koda of the Federation of OMR Residents’ Associations (FOMRRA), which organised the meeting, said residents faced issues including traffic snarls, lack of water supply and a sewagerage scheme, and had to cross toll plazas to reach their houses. This interaction helped them meet their candidates and understand policies and ideas of candidates and parties.
