Two coaches of Bangalore - Chennai Mail (train no. 12658) derailed near Basin Bridge in the early hours of Wednesday. There were no casualties and no one was injured, railway officials said. The incident happened around 4.30 a.m. when the train was taking a turn after the Basin Bridge railway station. A first AC and a second AC coaches derailed. "The train moves slowly in this stretch. So we were lucky," said an official.

Railway officials arrived at the spot soon after the incident. Passengers from the two derailed coaches were shifted to other compartments. The train reached Chennai Central around 5.30 a.m. Shunting engines were pressed into service. The derailed coaches were placed back on track by 7.45 a.m. and taken away.

However, the accident hit the suburban train services. "We had good business as trains were cancelled. Most of the commuters went to Beach Station as trains were cancelled," said Radhakrishnan, an autorickshaw driver near the Basin Bridge station.
