Bail for lawyers who protested inside first court

Almost a month after eight Madurai advocates and two students were arrested for staging a sit-in protest inside the First Bench of the Madras High Court, all of them were granted bail by the court on Monday.

On September 15, a section of advocates barged into the First Court carrying placards demanding that Tamil should be made the official language of the Principal Seat of the Madras High Court in Chennai and its Bench at Madurai.

Despite being told that their grievance could be redressed in the court, the protesters, refused to budge.

They continued to sit-in the court till late in the evening.

By then, the number of the protesters reduced to 12, including two Law College students.

12 arrested

Later, all the 12 were arrested and produced before a magistrate who granted bail to two woman lawyers and remanded the others to judicial custody.

On Monday, the 10 persons including two students, moved the High Court seeking to enlarge them on bail.
