A portion of Velachery Main Road, which is always in a damaged condition, has just become worse due to the rain. M. Arun of Dhandeeswaram Nagar, Velachery, said the road was frequently dug up by agencies like Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board and Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco). Recently, the Metrowater dug up Velachery Main Road near the Vijay Nagar bus terminus, just days after it was re-laid.

Representatives of civic welfare groups complained that in the absence of a proper storm water drain network in place, water stagnation had become a perennial problem and was also causing road damage.

Chennai Corporation officials said that Metrowater and Tangedco did not restore roads properly after digging them up. He alleged that a small portion of the road remained unpaved as the Metrowater did not complete its pipe-laying work.
