Continuing with the relief operations in severely-affected areas in the State, the Army has sent 10 of its teams to Cuddalore district.
“At present, 60 of our teams are working on ground, which have rescued over 19,500 stranded people. Another four medical teams are positioned in different places. A total of 20 Army teams are in the stand by in Delhi,” Colonel Antony Grossy from the Headquarters of Dakshin Bharat Area said.
Replying to a query, he said the situation in Chennai was “improving” compared to the situation on December 1. Asked whether any of the Army teams were in Tiruvallur district, he said, “We have not been given any input to go there.”
So far, the Army has distributed over 60,000 relief packets, mostly provided by the State government and from a few non-governmental organisations.
The Navy transferred 300 tonnes of fresh drinking water from its ship INS Shakti to a water barge in Chennai port on Sunday. A total of 15 boats and 70 divers disembarked from the ship at Chennai for continuation of relief efforts, while the ship left for next assignment, according to a Navy spokesperson.
The Navy on Saturday handed over about 100 tonnes of relief material to the Chennai Corporation and three of the Navy teams with food, water, medicines undertook operations in North Chennai.
