The Government College Teachers’ Manram has appealed to the Higher Education Department to appoint guest lecturers before colleges reopen.
The academic session will begin on Thursday with almost full strength as 80 per cent of seats have been filled in government colleges within 20 days of the publication of Plus Two results, the Manram said.
“We expect full strength as the students receive subsidies in fees. Hence it is necessary to have sufficient teachers when the college starts,” said P. Sivaraman, Manram’s general secretary.
Last year, 3,344 guest lecturers were appointed in government colleges soon after reopening. “The Manram has been demanding that their salary, which is Rs. 10,000, should be increased to Rs. 25,000. We also request the government to issue work order to the 1,093 teachers who were appointed through Teachers Recruitment Board,” he said.
