A 23-year-old youth died on the spot when he came under the wheels of a private bus on Velachery Main Road in East Tambaram on Thursday evening.

Traffic police said the victim was riding a two-wheeler when its front wheel got stuck in silt accumulated on the margins of the road. He fell on the road after losing control of the two-wheeler and came under the wheels of the private bus.

The victim, Allen Nalin Tony, had completed his engineering from a private college near Tambaram last year. A resident of Tiruvalluvar Street in Sivagami Nagar, Gowrivakkam, he was working in Ikraft Technologies, an outsourcing firm, right next to his house, for the past few months.

On Thursday evening, after Allen reached home he got a call from his friends to come to the city for watching a night show in a multiplex. Allen went on his motorcycle when the accident took place opposite UCO Bank, Selaiyur branch, around 8.30 p.m.

His body was taken to Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital in Chromepet and handed over to his relatives around noon on Friday after post-mortem.

V.Kannan, councillor from Ward No. 4 of Sembakkam town panchayat, said Allen was the only child of M.Fabian and Bella Fabian. Mr.Fabian was working abroad and had come home a couple of months ago to take treatment for an ailment. The family was among the first to move into the locality about 20 years ago, Mr. Kannan added.

Those present at the house were visibly angry with the State Highways Department, Tambaram Municipality and other government agencies for the pathetic condition of this important arterial road, a State Highway (No.48).

The stretch of the road between the Christ King school bus stop and UCO Bank is narrow and in shambles. The accumulation of silt only adds to the risks motorists face. Velachery Main Road is under the maintenance of Chennai City Roads Division of the State Highways Department.
