The wife of a migrant Tamil worker convicted to death in a murder case in Qatar sought the assistance of the State government on Monday in filing his appeal which, according to a lawyer who visited two of the convicts, is due by July 30.
Chelladurai Perumal (44) of Virudhunagar district and Alagappa Subramaniam of Pudukkottai were convicted to death on May 30 and another accused, Sivakumar Arasan of Salem, was sentenced to life.
At a press conference here, Suresh Kumar, an advocate representing the family, said that the deadline for their appeals will end on July 30, sixty days post-conviction. Kumar, who is in touch with Perumal’s wife C. Rajammal, travelled to Qatar earlier this month. He met Perumal, Subramaniam and Indian embassy officials. “If we fail to submit an appeal, their death sentence could be carried out,” he said.
Advocate Kumar said even he was not familiar with the details of the case as the documents provided to him by the embassy were in Arabic. Rajammal said that Perumal’s kidneys had failed and that he needed dialysis.
