The murder for gain case in which a sixty-year-old woman was beaten to death in Velachery on October 3 was solved on Friday with the arrest of two persons, including a relative of the victim.
According to police sources, Manonmani was found dead in a pool of blood at her house on Bharathiar Street in Velachery. She was alone at home when the incident took place while her family was at work.
On the instructions of the Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran, a special team led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Guindy) S. Senthilkumaran was formed to investigate the case. The team made enquiries with the local people and found that one of Manonmani’s relatives — Suresh (36) — had visited her with his friend — Arjunan (20) — a few days before the incident. The two were identified as hailing from Kancheepuram.
Following a tip-off, the Velachery Inspector S. Thennarasu arrested the duo on Friday. The accused confessed to having committed the murder as they were in debts following a loss in business. They had arrived on a motorcycle on the day of the offence and had parked the vehicle nearby.
The accused entered the house and had a conversation with Manonmani. Subsequently, Arjunan assaulted her indiscriminately on the head with a metal rod. The victim died on the spot. They took off with a two-sovereign gold chain from the victim and some jewellery from the almirah before escaping.
“The accused dragged the body of the victim to a room before fleeing. We have recovered the jewels from their possession,” Mr. Senthilkumaran added.
