A legal awareness book on consumer rights is now available in Tamil.
“Nugarvore Raja,” the Tamil translation of “Consumer is King” authored by Rajyalakshmi Rao, Member, National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, was launched at the premises of the Madras High Court on Friday.
The book condenses the author’s over 17 years of experience at various consumer fora and guides the reader on going about the process of legal remedy.
The publication, which also includes several landmark judgments, has been published in 12 regional languages.
Launching the book, Chief Justice of the Madras High Court H.L. Gokhale said the dissemination of knowledge and information was vital for ensuring the efficiency of the institutions mandated with protection of consumer rights. Consumer rights have been given utmost importance at the national level, with the apex dispute redressal mechanism headed by a former Supreme Court Judge and former High Court Judges presiding over the lower courts, Mr. Justice Gokhale said.
K. Sampath, former Madras High Court judge and former president State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, who received the first copy from the Chief Justice, said the book would be of immense use to the laity.
Former Supreme Court Judge S. Mohan said the book was invaluable, given the dearth of legal empowerment works in Tamil.
The publication was also a goldmine of information and would serve as an invaluable guide to the consumer in accessing justice.
Ms. Rao said the book was conceived to raise awareness on consumer rights and educate aggrieved persons on the legal remedies against deficiency in goods and services. One of the guiding principles in putting the book together was to explain legalese in simple terms, she said.
Padma Narayanan, translator, said the assignment of working on the Tamil version of the book was a learning experience.
B. Meenakshi of the publishers Giri Trading Agency also spoke.
