Surveillance cameras will come up soon in the central zone of the Chennai police to keep tabs on suspects indulging in crimes. About 20 speed-dome cameras will be installed by June 15 in Kilpauk, Purasawalkam, Golden George Nagar, Tirumanglam and other areas.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Central) V.A. Ravikumar said all banks in the zone had agreed to install high-resolution cameras as part of the closed circuit television (CCTV) network. Police had detected two robberies that took place in front of banks in the locality recently.
“We are also trying to create awareness among bank customers of the safety of cash. Different monitoring rooms will be set up to man the speed-dome cameras. Bank employees are being sensitised to the modus operandi of criminals,” he said.
Mr. Ravikumar said Nagarajan, a marine engineer of Tirunelveli district, who was arrested for trying to steal Rs.18 lakh from his friend had confessed to investigators that he stole the cash to settle dues and get a job in Singapore.
The matter was being referred to the Income Tax Department, he said.
