Six police personnel, including three women police constables, were injured when students of the Presidency College allegedly threw stones at them on Monday, police sources said.
A large posse of police personnel was deployed near the college premises early on Monday following an input that the students had planned to celebrate ‘Bus Day'. Police intercepted a couple of Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses fully occupied by the students.
After preventing them from travelling atop the vehicle, police escorted the buses to the college gate and persuaded the students to enter the campus. “After going inside the college, they threw stones on the police. They were apparently angry that we did not let them take the bus inside the campus or travel on top of the vehicles,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) M. Shakeel Akhter said.
The injured police personnel were administered first aid. The incident comes days after Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran announced that Bus Day celebrations would not be permitted in the city. “We will register a case against those responsible for the attack,” Mr. Shakeel added.
