The Perungalathur mofussil bus terminus is to be declared a ‘litter-free zone’ with the Directorate of Town Panchayats (DTP) intensifying its efforts in this direction.

A meeting — for working out modalities to make this crowded area a beautiful one — was conducted at Peerkankaranai on Tuesday and was attended by senior officials of DTP and representatives of Hand in Hand, the NGO in charge of garbage removal.

As a pilot project, the Peerkankaranai and Perungalathur town panchayats have discussed various ideas including creating awareness among the floating population that is estimated to be over one lakh per day.

Assistant Director of Town Panchayats, Kancheepuram, S. Kannan told The Hindu that the facility would be made a model bus terminus soon.

According to him, dedicated staff from Hand in Hand would be carrying out trash removal work in three shifts.

Provision of additional lighting facilities, purified drinking water and bio-toilets, installation of CCTV cameras, marking of bus bays, a wi-fi park and a high-end security system involving police teams are some of the features of the scheme.

Greening of the corridor is another main theme of this project. All the stakeholders, including travel agents and eateries, will be expected to collect and store their garbage, dust, rubbish and trade refuse in their respective premises and segregate them in two receptacles — a green dustbin for wet waste (degradable) and a white dustbin for dry waste — and hand over the same to garbage collectors.
