The Madras High Court has registered a notice sent by a lawyer to the Chief Justice as a suo motu contempt petition for initiating contempt proceedings against the lawyer and his client.

Prima facie it is a very contemptuous letter addressed to the Chief Justice,” the First Bench, comprising Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, stated in its order.

The order said that the notice dated July 23 was sent by S. Mazhaimeni Pandiyan, advocate, on behalf of his client Rettanai K. Kothandabani. In the notice, he had made certain grievances on behalf of his client regarding issue of certificates by a Tahsildar. It was stated that his client was facing much difficulty in getting them. In the notice, the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court had been called upon to take interest in the matter and to withdraw the new procedure to get certificates from the Tahsildar, failing which appropriate action for people's welfare should be taken, and the Chief Justice would be liable for the costs and consequences.

The Bench ordered notice to the lawyer and his client to show cause as to why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them.
