A man allegedly set ablaze his wife and daughter and committed suicide in C here on Sunday evening.
According to police sources, M. Thangapandian (26) of Devakottai in Sivaganga was staying in a rented house in Tirumangalam with his wife Shanti (24) and daughter Janani (6).
Around 3.30 p.m. on Sunday, Thangapandian set his wife and daughter on fire after pouring kerosene on them.
He also resorted to self-immolation.
On hearing the cries of the victims, the neighbours rushed to the spot and moved them to Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital.
While Shanthi died on way to the hospital, Thangapandian and Janani succumbed to burns hours after admission.
Acute poverty, debts
Acute poverty and debts forced Thangapandian to take the extreme step, police sources added.
