State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) has invited private parties and women self help groups to operate special infrastructure facilities at the Irungattukottai Apparel Park that would become operational in a fortnight.
The new facility comprising a training centre, dormitory, crèche, first aid centre and canteen was constructed at a cost of Rs.7 crore. It will be inaugurated by the Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on June 14.
Currently, six apparel units are operating at the Irungattukottai Apparel Park. Five units will start operating soon. SIPCOT has asked a private party to run its training centre, while women self help groups manage the dormitory, crèche, first aid centre and canteen.
“We will run the training centre on the society model. The core members of the society will comprise members from the existing operating units, SIPCOT Project Officer and other players. Later, the society will entrust the work of running it to a private player. Currently, tools and training equipment worth about Rs.60 lakh have been installed at this centre,” SIPCOT Chairman and Managing Director N. Govindan told The Hindu .
According to Mr. Govindan, even private players can take up this place on lease to conduct classes or provide hands-on training to women in designing, stitching and cutting.
The training centre is located on the ground and first floor that could easily accommodate around 50 to 100 people at any given time. The construction cost of the training centre is Rs.1.5 crore.
“In all, the dormitory has 55 rooms that can easily accommodate 330 women. Each room measures around 200 sq.ft. The rooms will be given to those working in this area. Again, we are scouting for women self help groups to run this dormitory as well as crèche, first aid centre and canteen,” said S. Vincent, SIPCOT special project manager.
