July 24, 2010 01:42 am | Updated 01:42 am IST - CHENNAI:

The State government, in an official release on Friday, stated that C. Umashankar [who belongs to the 1990 batch of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers] had been suspended.

The action has been taken under All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969, on the basis of complaints that he had obtained a false Scheduled Caste certificate by changing the place of residence/nativity and religion.

It was also based on information collected from the school and college in which he had studied and the offices concerned.

Enquiry to be initiated

As his continuance in service was not considered desirable in the interests of the public, Mr. Umashankar had been suspended as disciplinary action and enquiry through an appropriate agency would be initiated, the release added.

Till recently, he held the post of Commissioner, Small Savings.
