French companies are all set to support the Chennai Corporation and other local bodies in improving civic infrastructure and services in Chennai Metropolitan Area and the outskirts.

The State government has asked all the heads of departments and second level officers of the Chennai Corporation to participate in a Global Investors Meet (GIM) session on French technology to improve civic infrastructure and solid waste management facilities on Wednesday.

At least 12 French companies that are participating in the GIM are likely to contribute significantly to civic improvement including waste management, water supply, urban transport, communication, urban security, street furniture, energy efficiency and renewable energy.

“Chennai Corporation has not been able to find a solution to problems in solid waste management and dump yards. Engineers from Chennai Corporation have been directed to participate in a session by companies and senior officials from France, focussing on technologies suitable for existing conditions. Innovations are likely to be adopted after the meet,” said an official.

The companies that offer technology for coping with civic issues relating to water and waste management include IKOS and Suez-Environnement. Such companies are expected to offer a range of technology options on multi-sector facility for recovering recyclable waste matter and non-residual electronic waste.

One of the facilities in France recovers more than 36,230 tonnes of waste. Technology for recycling of transparent PET plastic is also expected to be screened for generation of Polyethylene Terephthalate granules from recycled bottles collected from private homes on behalf of local governments in the metropolitan area.

A design to assemble all the waste processing sectors together in the same site by integrating mechanical sorting, organic recycling and power recovery units is yet another aspect of the innovations by such companies.

Transport solutions

Urban transport solutions are likely to be offered by Alstom, Egis and Lumiplan in an innovative and environment-friendly manner through a socially-responsible business model. Better passenger information systems and integrated solutions for comfort and safety will improve urban mobility.

Technology for communication and urban security and street furniture will be offered by Alcatel Lucent, JCDecaux, Safran and Thales.

Energy efficiency and renewable energy technology and innovations will come from ACME, Alstom Power and Schnieder Electric.
