The Chennai Corporation will next month establish a dialysis unit each in Perambur and Valluvar Kottam to provide treatment free of cost to the poor, Mayor M.Subramanian said here on Tuesday.

Speaking at the inauguration of a free eye hospital of the civic body in Velachery, he said over 2,000 persons in the city have been identified with health conditions that require dialysis.

The proposed facilities would be of help to those who cannot afford dialysis on account of the exorbitant cost of over Rs.8,000 a month.

The first eye hospital of the Chennai Corporation was inaugurated a few days ago in Periamet. He also announced that the civic body would set up a school for hearing-impaired students shortly. Old age homes in Domming Kuppam and Pulianthope would start functioning soon, he added. A total of 60,972 students of Chennai Schools have been screened by the Corporation Health Department so far this fiscal and 3,568 of them identified for distribution of spectacles. A total of 31 of the students received spectacles on Tuesday at the Velachery eye hospital.
