Sub-Inspector killed in accident

CHENNAI: A Sub-Inspector of Police attached to the Muthialpet Traffic Unit died in a road accident near Mannadi on Wednesday.

According to police sources, the SI, Muruganandham (35), was riding a motorcycle when a speeding lorry ran over him. The victim suffered grievous injuries and died on the way to the hospital. The driver of the heavy vehicle fled the scene. The Elephant Gate Traffic Investigation police have registered a case.

Self-immolation

A woman who allegedly resorted to self-immolation succumbed to burns at MGR Nagar on Thursday.

Police said Kokila (26) of Tamarai Vinayagar Nagar set herself ablaze after sending her children to school. While her husband Karthik (30) had gone to work, a relative, Rejeswari (32), who was at home was found lying unconscious. Kokila who suffered serious burns died on the way to the hospital. The MGR Nagar police are investigating.

Laptops missing

Ten laptops were reported missing from a water purifier firm at Alwarpet on Wednesday.

According to police sources, the administrative officer of the firm located on Murrays Gate Road lodged a complaint with the Teynampet police that the laptops were kept in a safe. They were reported missing when a routine check was conducted on Tuesday.

Police perused footage recorded in surveillance cameras in the firm. A special team has been formed to investigate, the sources added.

Seeks protection

Moorthy, husband of Jayanthi, who filed nominations to contest from the Rishivandiyam constituency as an independent candidate, has submitted a petition to the Chennai Police seeking protection.

According to police sources, Moorthy was allegedly attacked by a gang when he and his son accompanied Jayanthi on March 26 to the Collectorate in Villuppuram where she filed nomination papers. He owns an oil firm at Virugambakkam here. He sought adequate protection to his family and property, the sources added.

Three detained

Three persons arrested in a spurious drugs case were detained under the Goondas Act.

According to a release issued by the Crime Branch CID, the Drugs Department during a surprise check at Maduravoyal recently found ‘Voveran SR 100' tablets not conforming to the prescribed standards. Based on a complaint, the CBCID registered a case and arrested six persons on charges or procuring, distributing and selling the tablets.

Since the accused had committed offences endangering public peace and safety, Perumalsamy, Sathyanathan and Ravisekhar who were among those arrested were detained under the Goondas Act.

In a separate development, the agency filed chargesheet against 31 accused persons, including Meenakshi Sundaram, Sanjai Kumar, Pradeep Kumar Chodia and others in a spurious drugs case registered last year, the release said.

Huts destroyed

TAMBARAM: A couple of huts in West Sanjay Gandhi Nagar, Chrompet, were destroyed in a fire caused by firecrackers on Wednesday night.

According to Chitlapakkam police, people celebrated the victory of India in the cricket World Cup semi-finals by bursting firecrackers, including rockets.

One of the rockets fell on the thatched roofs and two huts were completely gutted. Though none was hurt, property inside the huts was destroyed.

Detained under Goondas Act

G. Sankar (40) of Morapakkam near Madurantakam in Kancheepuram district has been detained under the Goondas Act for a year. He was involved in several cases of smuggling of liquor in the city suburbs and Kancheepuram district. He was arrested by personnel of Prohibition Enforcement Wing in Madhavaram a couple of months ago when a huge quantity of liquor was being smuggled into the city suburbs from outside the State. A press release from Karan Singha, Chennai Suburban Police Commissioner said.

The police also arrested two women on charges of trying to smuggle 10 litres of arrack. A police team was conducting checks at Nazarathpettai near Poonamallee and searched the bags of the women who alighted from a bus. They had concealed the plastic sachets containing arrack inside their bags. Valli and Rani, both in their sixties, are reported to have purchased the liquor at Nagari in Andhra Pradesh and later reached Tiruttani, from where they took a bus to Chennai.

Pirated CDs seized

Pirated CDs of recently released Tamil films were seized and a 35-year-old man was arrested in this connection. A team of Central Crime Branch policemen conducted a raid in a building near the Senkundram bus stand from where they seized more than 2,000 pirated CDs.

They arrested M. Sivakumar and confiscated the CDs and equipment that included two central processing units, each with a capacity to copy 11 discs simultaneously.
