For the nearly-100 students attired in their convocation robes and caps, it was a special day at the Jayalakshmi Narayanaswami College of Education here on Wednesday.

They were graduating at the institute's first convocation, to practice what they learnt and dreamt of doing all these days. The batch of B.Ed students will soon take up teaching assignments at different schools.

Speaking at the convocation, A.R. Veeramani, Registrar, Tamil Nadu Teachers' Education University, said teachers formed the backbone of a nation. “The future of the country lies in your hands,” he told the graduating batch of students.

Observing that a teacher's life was marked by life-long learning, he said teachers should always lend a willing ear to students. “Listen to what they have to say. They might have a point,” Prof. Veeramani said.

Emphasising the need for looking back at one's own path, he said: “You may be really successful, but do not forget the path you took, the struggles and the sacrifices of others.”

B. Yamini, who received her degree said she looked forward to a very meaningful career as a teacher. “I am also pursuing my masters in Tamil. I want to keep learning as I think that is the first step towards becoming a good teacher,” she said.

D. Sabitha, Secretary to School Education Department, Jayalakshmi Narayanaswamy, Chairperson of the college, Lingampalli Daniel, principal and R, Ramachandran, honorary secretary were present.
