From a day's event with local storytellers and Indian tales, the third edition of Hoo's Tales, a storytelling festival, has got bigger this year with a carnival of stories spread over a week.

Hoo's Tales opened here on Thursday at Sivagami Pethachi Auditorium in Mylapore. The 3-day festival of stories, workshop on puppetry and storytelling is being organised by Hippocampus at different venues in the city. Addressing a press conference, the performers said that though storytelling is picking up, it needs more encouragement. Germany-based Richard Martin, who teaches adults the art, said storytelling is encouraged in German schools as speaking and communication skills.

Talking about the challenges for a storyteller, Mr. Jenkins said they compete with TV, internet and the task is making any session relevant . “I make old stories modern by bringing things live,” he said. Ms. Raghunath said though storytelling sessions are getting popular but more professional storytellers need to come. Chandni Khanna of Hippocampus said the festival was held in Bangalore recently.
