Bids called for parking lot yet again

The Chennai Corporation has for the third time invited bids for the construction and operation of a multi-level parking facility for cars and two wheelers at the Broadway bus station.

The project, which has been in the offing for at least two years now, will be further delayed: the process of floating tenders and evaluating bidders will take months.

According to Corporation officials, work to establish the multi-level parking facility would take two years. The facility was proposed in one of the most congested areas of north Chennai. The first tender did not receive any bids. The pre-bid meeting for fresh tenders floated recently was attended by eight companies. They asked for more time to submit tender documents. The next process, which progressed to the financial evaluation stage in May this year, was cancelled after a Kolkata-based firm that had made it to the evaluation stage failed to meet the requirements.

According to officials, the firm asked the civic body for Rs.1 crore to operate it, whereas as per tender stipulations the firm had to pay the amount as royalty to the civic body.
