CHENNAI: Bad roads, haphazard vehicular parking, and encroachments of pedestrian paths are the major civic problems in Ward 183, one of the newly added areas, covering areas including Kottivakkam and Palavakkam along ECR and Kandanchavadi and Taramani on OMR.

Some of the roads like Lakshmana Perumal Nagar Fourth Cross Street in Kottivakkam off ECR are unfit for motoring. “No steps have been taken to re-lay the road. Vehicle users from Kottivakkam, Palavakkam, and Neelankarai commute through the stretch to go to Thiruvalluvar Nagar, Valmiki Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, and beyond,” V. Ravi, a resident, said.

Another problem of residents in Kottivakkam, particularly the residents of A. G. S. Colony Beach Main Road is the fish market encroaching upon the main road. “While the fish vendors occupy a portion of the main road, the vehicles parked by buyers on the roads is causing difficulty,” said a resident.

While appreciating the Chennai Corporation for having renovated the fish market on ECR at a cost of Rs. 8.5 lakhs, the residents have appealed to the corporation get the vendors function from inside the market premises.

Residents demand the arrest of sewage discharge from fishing hamlets into the sea through storm water drains at Kottivakkam, and Neelankarai as it could damage the marine ecosystem. Residents also demand a tar road connecting Kottivakkam Beach Kuppam Road, and Palavakkam.

On the OMR, the demands are different. Residents of Taramani requested relaying of the road in the intersection of Pammal Nallathambi Street, and Thanthai Periyar Nagar, Taramani, and a traffic signal at the intersection.

“With vehicles coming from Velachery, Taramani, Thiruvanmiyur, and Perungudi, and Kandanchavadi, the intersection is congested during peak hours leading to chaos,” K. R. Krishnan, a resident said. Likewise, the residents complained that the haphazard vehicular parking on M.G.R. Salai was creating traffic bottlenecks during rush hours.

P. Raja Ram, AIADMK councillor, said, “ Developmental works including road-laying, storm water drains, underground drainage system are being carried out at a cost of Rs.45 crore. The works will be completed soon.”
