Assembly session from today

Largest Opposition in the history of the House may enliven the proceedings

June 16, 2016 12:00 am | Updated November 17, 2021 04:36 am IST - CHENNAI:

The first Budget session of the 15{+t}{+h}Tamil Nadu Assembly will formally begin on Thursday with the address to the House by Governor K. Rosaiah.

The session is expected to see some sparks given that the Assembly will have the largest Opposition in history.

Sources in the AIADMK said some big announcement on implementation of promises in the party election manifesto could be expected during the session. “As already mentioned by the Chief Minister, implementation of all the promises made to the people will be a priority,” said an AIADMK MLA.

It would be interesting to watch how the government proposes to tackle the funding if big ticket schemes are indeed announced. The DMK is gearing up to corner the government on the debt issue, which at the moment stands at over Rs. 2 lakh crore.

“We will focus on the financial status of government organisations like the Tangedco,” said a DMK legislator. This would also be the final address to the Assembly by Mr. Rosaiah given that his tenure ends in August. Mr. Rosaiah, a Congress appointee, had managed to retain office, though the Narendra Modi Government at the Centre eased out others appointed to the gubernatorial post during the erstwhile UPA regime.
