Applicants for engineering admissions cross 2-lakh mark

The total number of applicants for engineering admissions crossed the two lakh mark on the last day of sale of forms on Friday.

Anna University – Chennai Vice-Chancellor P. Mannar Jawahar said 2,01,184 application forms had been sold for the 1.08 lakh engineering seats currently available in the State under the counselling process.

42,000 applications submitted

Over 42,000 application forms had been submitted on the very first day they were accepted at the university, he said.

The last date for submission of application forms was May 31 and university officials would work on the weekend to help applicants.

While the addition of a number of seats to the counselling process was pending owing to legal issues, there might be a reduction in the number of available seats as 67 of the 153 colleges affiliated to the university had received notices for not adhering to norms.

Dr. Mannar Jawahar said that the inspection committee had found that 180 courses offered by these colleges did not satisfy minimum criteria on infrastructure, faculty and other norms and hence the colleges were issued show-cause notices.

If the colleges did not submit satisfactory compliance reports by June 14 or if the inspection committee on a subsequent visit did not find the deficiencies corrected, the courses may not be offered to students under the counselling process.
