Aavin milk supply delayed

Aavin milk supply to various areas in the city, including Adyar and Velachery, was delayed by almost four hours on Friday morning.

According to Aavin officials, the delay was owing to a disruption in the distribution network in these areas.

The milk is supplied to the city from the dairies in Sholinganallur, Madhavaram and Ambattur.

The Sholinganallur dairy, which caters to Pallavaram, Thoraipakkam, Velachery, Adyar, and parts of Mylapore, dispatches 32 vehicles on various routes.

An Aavin distributor on route 78, which covers Perungudi, Kandanchavadi and PTC Quarters, and is closest to the dairy, said that the daily supply reaches depots as late as 10 or 11 a.m. whereas distant areas such as ECR, which is also served by the Sholinganallur dairy, receive milk before daybreak.

The problem of late supply began on February 16 on this route and persists.

“Most people are working couples. There is no one to collect the milk sachet if it arrives late. The milk gets spoilt and we receive complaints. A few high ranking government officials in the area recently complained about the delay to Aavin. After that we received supply on time for two days but now it has become erratic,” the distributor said.

Officials manning the toll-free number of Aavin complaint cell said they received around 40 complaints about delayed supply.

According to a spokesperson of Aavin, absenteeism by labourers employed by the lorry contractor had caused the delay in supply to the depots in Velachery, Pallavaram and Adyar.

The problem had been set right and there would be no delay henceforth, he added.
