Women from Aanambakkam Colony submitted a memorandum to the district administration on Tuesday seeking protection for male members of their families from “police action.”
Claiming that police visited their colony on Monday evening in search of men, stating that they wanted to arrest them in connection with a ‘road-roko' staged at Aanambakkam in the morning, the petitioners alleged that their colony residents had neither blocked road nor staged any agitation.
“On Monday, we only questioned the attitude of a bus driver belonging to Aanambakkam. The driver, who brought the vehicle to a residential area located about one km from Aanambakkam, refused to bring the vehicle to our colony which is just half-km from thatarea,” the petitioners said.
The police who came to the spot subsequently urged students and women commuters from the colony to disperse instead of taking any action against the bus driver, who spoke ill of the colony residents. A team of policemen came to the colony on Monday evening looking for the youth. Fearing arrest, the male members went into the hiding, the petitioners alleged, and sought the intervention of the district administration to restore peace in their area.
