25 new hostels for students coming up

The State government is to open 25 hostels for students of the Backward Classes, the Most Backward Classes and Denotified Communities and a hostel for Muslim students in the State in the current financial year.

Backward Classes and Most Backward Classes Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran replying to demands pertaining to his Ministry said totally 1,207 hostels were functioning in the State where free boarding and lodging were given to the students to facilitate them to pursue their studies without any financial strain.

About 73,000 students were being provided accommodation in these hostels. Of the 1207 hostels, 874 were functioning in their own buildings and in the current financial year buildings would be constructed for 25 hostels at a cost of Rs. 12.5 crore, which were now functioning in private buildings.

Apart from upgrading two high schools meant for the Denotified community, 18 new class rooms would be constructed for 7 community schools at a cost of Rs. 84.50 lakh. Sixty hostels of BCs, MBCs and Denotified Communities would be provided 2 computers each during the current financial year.

About 1,000 engineering college students of the BC, MBC and Denotified Communities would be given training in computer software and English to enable them to get employment in software communities.
