As many as 209 ganja peddlers were arrested by the city police in the last 16 days and 155 cases were booked for smuggling, stocking and selling. Besides, 149 kg ganja had been seized from them.
Commissioner of Police Shankar Jiwal had ordered a special campaign under the name of DAD (Drive Against Drugs) and DABToP (Drive against Banned Tobacco Products).
The police intensified surveillance near schools and colleges to prevent students from accessing drugs and conducted raids on shops and other outlets near these premises for three days from Wednesday.
As many as 268 persons were picked up for stocking and selling banned tobacco products and 277 kg tobacco products seized from them besides booking 262 cases.
“The police personnel will keep constant vigil to prevent the sale of narcotic and psychotropic substances and banned tobacco products. Stringent action will be taken against those who possess ganja, tobacco products such as mava, gutkha and psychotropic tablets illegally, smuggling them from other places,” Mr. Jiwal said.
Goondas Act invoked
The Commissioner appealed to the public to pass on information on drug peddling to the nearest police station and the identity of the informant will be kept anonymous.
He issued orders detaining 14 accused under Goondas Act last week. With this, 74 accused were detained under the Goondas Act since January 1 of this year.
