10 more post office passport kendras in December

North Chennai residents can apply for passports at GPO in Parry’s Corner

The Department of Posts is set to open 10 more Post Office Passport Kendras (POPSK) in December.

Post offices in Theni, Tiruvallur, Arakkonam, Kancheepuram, Erode, Coonoor, Thenkasi, Dharmapuri and Arni would offer the facility from December.

The post offices were identified based on the demand. The objective of the venture is to have one such facility in a radius of 50 km.

At present, 12 kendras offer such service across the State.

Nearly 1.22 lakh people have received their passports so far in the past one year in Tamil Nadu.

Schedule appointments

Residents who apply for passports online may schedule their appointments in the nearby POPSKs.

It would be delivered to their areas through speed posts. North Chennai residents may soon be able to apply for passports in GPO at Parry’s Corner itself.

R. Anand, Postmaster General, Chennai city region, said, “We are now training postal staff to provide the services under the supervision of a representative from regional passport office. The service has met with a good response from residents. On an average, the three POPSKs in Vellore, Villupuram and Tiruvannamalai falling under Chennai city region receive 175 appointments daily for passports. These offices have made nearly 46,811 transactions since the inception of service in the past year.”
