A 21-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide in Cubbon Park on Saturday night.

The incident came to light on Sunday morning when a security guard noticed her body hanging from a tree. Soon, the police were alerted.

The police identified the deceased as Santhoshi N. of Nepal who used to work in a spa in UB City. She was living in a rented house along with her father at D’Souza Layout, near Vittal Mallya Road.

Parents’ objection

The police said Santhoshi was in a relationship with Naresh, a private company employee. On Saturday evening, Naresh had taken her to his house to introduce her to his parents. Naresh’s parents objected to their plan to get married saying that they belonged to different castes, according to the police.

Upset over this, Santhoshi had an argument with Naresh and his parents, before leaving their house, the police said. When Santhoshi’s father, Kabir Raja, noticed that she had not returned home, he went searching for her and also contacted her friends.

On Sunday morning, the police gathered details about Santhoshi and informed Raja.

Raja then filed a complaint alleging that Naresh was responsible for her death.

On the run

The Cubbon Park police, who booked a case against Naresh based on Raja’s statement, are searching for him. He is said to be on the run.

CCTV cameras to be installed

Reacting to the incident, Mahantesh Murgod, Deputy Director of Cubbon Park, said, “The incident happened near the entrance to the park from UB City side. The woman seems to have entered the park through the small gate kept open for walkers. A security guard spotted the body around 5.30 a.m. and altered the department. We called the police soon after.”

Mr. Murgod said steps were being taken to ensure greater safety inside Cubbon Park. “We are working to make the lung space safe. We have identified around 100 spots to place CCTV cameras. Also, 300 smart lighting will be installed inside the park. The work on both will start soon,” he said.
