A 36-year-old newly married woman has alleged that she was confined and tortured by her in-laws for three days after being accused of being possessed by an ‘evil spirit’. She was rescued by her brother on Sunday night and is now undergoing treatment at Dr. Ambedkar Medical College.
While she filed a complaint on Monday, the K.G. Halli police are yet to take action. Satheeshwari married Soudaraj (38), a mason, six months ago. After the couple returned from a pilgrimage to Velankanni on Friday, her mother-in-law and two sisters-in law allegedly locked her up in a room saying that she was possessed by an ‘evil spirit’ and needed treatment.
Satheeshwari told The Hindu that they beat her on the pretext of removing the ‘evil spirit’. On Sunday, a pastor from a local church came to the house and she sought his help. The pastor informed her brother Shivakumar, who rushed to the house in the evening and rescued her.
A senior police officer said it was a case of a domestic fight. “We have taken up a non-cognizable case in this regard and waiting for her recovery to record the statement,” he said.
