A woman was assaulted by her in-laws on the city Police Commissioner’s office premises on Tuesday morning, while she was on her way to attend a counselling session. On hearing her cries for help, police personnel and bystanders came to her aid.

The victim, Almas Banu, 28, who said she had been abused by her husband’s family in the past, filed a complaint with the Vidhana Soudha police accusing three men — all relatives of her husband — of attacking her. They have been identified as Mubarak, Idris and Javed, and have been booked under Sections 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 323 (assault) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. Almas was taken to a hospital.

“Almas married Raziqhulla 13 years ago and the couple have two children. However, she approached the women’s helpline for counselling after she separated from him when he started abusing her,” the police said.
