Voters’ list for polls being verified

June 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - Bengaluru:

Over 35,000 names in the electoral rolls are now being verified. A special software used by the Election Commission identified these names when the rolls were put through it to weed out duplication and identify other errors such as incomplete details and missing photo.

Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner G. Kumar Naik told presspersons here on Monday that the “cleaning up” of the voters’ list was taken up from time to time. Currently, there were 71.22 lakh eligible voters in the city.

He said the voters’ list updated till June 15 had been uploaded on the BBMP’s website (www.bbmp.gov.in). Citizens who wished to enrol their names could visit the local BBMP office.

“The verification process takes at least 10 days. We may be able to add names to the list only if the citizens submit the applications with relevant documents as soon as possible,” he said.

People could also apply online through the Election Commission’s website, he said.

Mr. Naik said 35,636 officials, mainly schoolteachers, would be on duty at the 6,733 polling stations across the city.

Conceding that the teachers’ academic work may be affected, he said efforts would be taken to minimise disruption of classes. Notices were being issued to government officials chosen for poll duty.
