The Mico Layout police have registered an FIR against residents of an apartment complex who allegedly threatened two animal rights activists for feeding stray dogs at BTM Layout on Friday.

Based on a complaint filed by Nirmala K., the police have charged the residents under Sections 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and also under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

In her complaint, Ms. Nirmala said she and her friend Geetha were confronted by the residents who objected to them feeding the dogs.

She claimed that though she tried to reason with them, they abused and physically assaulted them. According to Ms. Nirmala, some residents also kicked the dogs.

“We have identified the accused and summoned them for questioning,” said the police.

Ms. Nirmala said the residents were worried that the strays would attack them. “There is an urgent need for the BBMP to educate people and create awareness about animal rights,” she said.
